Owner/operators - stop wearing all of the hats

Oct 18, 2024

If you own and run your company, you'll know the feeling all too well. Juggling multiple roles while trying to keep your business afloat. One minute you’re the CEO, the next you’re customer service, and before you know it, you’re cleaning the sink. It is overwhelming, and you may now know it’s not sustainable. So, how do you stop wearing all the hats and reclaim some of your sanity?

First things first, it’s time to recognize that you can’t do it all. Many small business owners feel the pressure to handle everything themselves, but that mindset can lead to burnout. Instead, start by assessing your strengths. What tasks do you excel at, and which ones drain your energy? Once you have a clear picture, you can begin to delegate or outsource the tasks that don't suit you.

Delegation is key. If you have a team, empower them to take on more responsibility. Trust your employees to handle tasks that fall within their skill set. Not only does this lighten your load, but it also gives them a sense of ownership and accountability. If you don’t have a team yet, consider freelancers or contractors for specific projects. This way, you can focus on the core aspects of your business without getting bogged down by every little detail.

Another strategy is to streamline. Look for ways to automate the repetitive and boring tasks that consume your time. For instance, using software for invoicing, scheduling, or email marketing can save you hours each week. Ask yourself how you can work smarter and not harder, giving you more time to focus on the important stuff.

Don’t underestimate the power of setting boundaries, either. It’s easy to fall into the trap of working late nights and weekends, but that can lead to a never-ending cycle of exhaustion. Set work hours and then stick to them. Make time for life. A rested mind is far more effective than one that’s constantly running on empty.

Lastly, it’s okay to ask for help. Get good people around you who have already solved the problems you are having, then ask them how they did it. A network of people that 'GET IT' will make all the difference. Sharing your challenges with others will provide fresh perspectives and ideas you may not have considered.

Stepping back from wearing all the hats is a journey, not an overnight fix. Recognise your strengths, delegate tasks, streamline processes, set boundaries, and get the right help.
